Honors Program Initiatives

Book Club

The book club votes on one (or more) leisure book(s) to read throughout the semester. Readings are 50-70 pages between meetings, with a weekly discussion at the meetings.

Meetings are held in the Honors Classroom (NH3 153) every Sunday at 5:30PM.

For more information, contact Hope Lea (leah@my.erau.edu), Elizabeth Lobaugh (lobaughc@my.erau.edu), or Reagan Chen (chenr6@my.erau.edu).

Community Garden

The ERAU Honors Community Garden was first established in 2019 as a partnership with Derbyshire Place. Since 2023, the garden is part of an ongoing service project with Barracks of Hope, a safe home for Veterans.

The garden is led by Honors Program students with the support of Dr. Brown and Dr. Williams and strives to give back to a community facing a lack of access to healthy, fresh, and safe produce. All produce grown by Riddle students is organic and non-GMO.

We welcome both Honors and Non-Honors students of any gardening knowledge who want to get off campus and lend a hand in assorted gardening and engineering-related projects. The Honors Community Garden is a great place to make friends, support the local community, and learn about sustainable, organic gardening techniques.

Meetings are held at the Barracks of Hope every Saturday at 8AM in the fall, and at 9AM in the spring.

For more information, contact Nadia Krueger (krugen2@my.erau.edu), Michael Ricciardella (ricciam1@my.erau.edu), or Rahela Dolha (dolhar@my.erau.edu).

Honors Student Association (HSA)

The Honors Student Association (HSA) is a registered student organization (RSO) within the University and led by the Honors Program.

The HSA strengthens the Honors student's sense of community and organization through its commitment to social activities and service. The student officers also serve to communicate student ideas, concerns, and suggestions to the Honors Program Leadership.

Meetings are held in the Honors Classroom (NH3 153) every Wednesday at 7PM.

Plastic-Free Campus Initiative (PFCI)

The Plastic-Free Campus Initiative (PFCI) is a group of students and faculty looking to make the campus clean and sustainable by eliminating single-use plastics across campus facilities.

Items like straws, food containers, and water bottles comprise the bulk of student waste, and they are among the simplest objects to replace with environmentally friendly alternatives. Through petitions, roadside clean-ups, meetings with administration, poster presentations, and general tabling to promote sustainable living, the PFCI is one of the leading environmental groups on campus.

Meetings are held in the Honors Classroom (NH3 153) every Tuesday at 5PM.

For more information, contact John "Jack" McSwiggin (mcswiggj@my.erau.edu) or Peter Nguyen (nguyep19@my.erau.edu).

Pure Water Project (PWP)

The Pure Water Project designs, constructs, tests, and installs their own 4-stage solar powered water purification systems. Almost every year since 2010, they have brought a purification system to areas of Haiti and the Dominican Republic without reliable access to clean water; not only improving public health but also stimulating the local economy through water business.

The club focuses on mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and water quality testing, but students of any major or focus are welcome and encouraged to be a part of the project!

Tutoring/S.T.E.A.M @ Hope Place

Honors Program students volunteer 1 night per week to go out into the local community and provide S.T.E.A.M. tutoring and project opportunities. This allows students of all ages and backgrounds an introduction into the world of STEM.

Tutors meet at Hope Place every week Monday through Thursday at 4PM.

S.T.E.A.M meet at Hope Place every Thursday at 6PM.

For more information, contact Angelina Scalice (scalicea@my.erau.edu) for Tutoring, and Riley Dienna (diennar@my.erau.edu) for S.T.E.A.M.
