How do I get started?

Attend one of our weekly meet-ups

We are constantly welcoming new members to our organization throughout the year, so if you're interested, just show up! This is the best way to get a sense of how we work and how to meet your goals by joining us.

Be sure to join our group on CampusGroups to make sure that you dont miss out on any of our exciting events!

Determine Commitment

Whether you're just starting out with sailing and want to learn more, or are looking to compete on our team, we have a place for you!

Committing to the team can be challenging to balance with school since our team travels regionally most weekends out of the school year, so it may not be for everyone. No worries though, we have an extensive recreational program so that you can sail virtually whenever you want!

Gather Your Gear

You can expect to bring a couple things to prepare you for this next adventure of your college experience! The club provides much of the PPE and functional equipment that you will need to be successful, but there are a few things that you will need to bring.

Have fun!

Our goal is to make sure that you have fun within our club. At the end of your time in college you should be able to look back on the times that you had with the sailing club and be able to cherish them as some of your most valuable memories in college.

FAQ's

Q: Do I need any experience sailing to join the club?

A: Nope. We will teach you all of the skills you need to achieve your goals! We have a place for all skill levels!

Q: What kind of gear do I need to get started?

A: You will need a pair of shoes that you will be comfortable getting wet, polarized sunglasses, lots of sun protection, and a good attitude!

Q: What should I expect to pay to be a part of this club?

A: Currently, all expenses are paid for by the club, with the exception of a few fundraising events. All regatta travel and lodging are paid for, but members are usually expected to pay for their own meals on travel. Additionally, any personal sailing gear is expected to be paid for by individual members.

Q: I'm really busy with school, how do I balance that with sailing?

A: Many of our sailors are pilots, engineers, rocket scientists, etc. so we are very much familiar with how busy people's schedules may get, so that is why we let you determine your commitment level. If you choose to travel for regattas, many sailors (and students) choose to catch up on their studies on the road, so we are very accepting of your educational needs.

Q: When and where do you guys practice?

A: We practice 3 days a week, typically W, Th, F; but depending on general membership availability at the Halifax Sailing Association. Don't worry if you don't have a car, our members arrange carpool every day to make sure everyone is able to attend practice.
