This morning, Marietta and I were contacted by Kenny in the Groundskeeping department about a kitten they'd caught near the loading dock. We met in that area and also learned there are four more kittens and the mom hanging around. We set out traps inside the fenced-off chiller area and Kenny is going to check them for us about every hour. I'm on campus until about 7:00 and will retrieve any cats that are trapped, and will coordinate with Marietta and Jonathan over the weekend to see if we can take turns trying to catch the rest. Marietta took the single kitten home to bathe and feed it, so at least one of them is safe! We estimate they're 5-6 weeks old.
We are also continuing to have the problem of a mystery person putting food in that area for the cats. I emailed Charlie Sevastos, the university lawyer and a strong supporter of PAWS, to get advice on how to find out who's doing this and make them stop. Because of the location, it seems most likely to be someone working in the COA or maintenance hangar across the street, but I can't be sure. In fact, this mystery feeder managed to sneak food out sometime between 9:30 and 11:30, and the mom and two kittens were eating it, thus distracting them from the food in the traps we set. it's almost as if whoever is putting the food out is watching and waiting until no one is around so they can be sneaky about it. It's very frustrating! In the past, the club has discussed having portable signs made to put in the places we find unauthorized food, alerting people not to feed the cats. I recommend we revisit this project in the Fall term when everyone's back on campus.
I created a photo album for this particular group of cats and trapping effort and it's in the Photos section of the Campus Groups page. Here is a direct link also. https://cglink.me/2fJ/f4ca42325f227a40146e29804eec989a65de2c8d979d84c3d76a14e1b40991e
