Offshore Team,
Had a good meeting last Monday and two fun day-sails last weekend (thank you @Nick Kellog for leading!).
For next week, Monday 18 Sep, we'll be shifting our meeting right to begin at 5:30. We've decided on this change based on some of the input we received over the when2meet and TEAMS polls. Based on how many people show this Monday, we'll maybe stay with that timeline or shift back to earlier: Give me input!
(If you haven't registered on TEAMS yet: Link to the Offshore TEAMS page)
Also, NEW EVENTS - See bottom of this email to register! As before, if you want to be on the water, register for it, and then the Senior attendee will organize/Skipper the event. Remember that the time of day posted for each event is entirely tentative, as it will be revised based on the availability of the registered crew, weather, and objectives!
Q&A:
I've been asked: Mario - how can I sign up for the bigger events/competitions? How can I demonstrate my skills? How can I get out on the water to sail or be more involved?
Answer: RSVP (or register) for our events on Campusgroups! Registering lets the Officer's know of your availability for an event and desire to be considered. Since we all go to school and most of us have day jobs, it's difficult to organize face-to-face. RSVP'ing (aka registering), is THE way to get involved! It demonstrates initiative, a desire to be on the water, and creates a focused approach to each event. And then, when you get out on the water with our Skippers, you can learn, socialize, and demonstrate your aptitude. Ultimately, when you then register for bigger events/competitions in the exact same manner on CampusGroups, this then creates the roster of availability which the President (me) then hands to the Team Captain (Nick) so he can then make an informed and balanced decision on who attends! Some events are a bit more open, some are a bit more competitive, and some don't really require any filtering (tabling/meetings/Lively work days). Bottom-line: RSVP and we'll take it from there!
Coming Events Summary:
- 16 Sep Day-Excursion - Sign up to get on Lively! This event will be led by Team Captain Nick, who intends to ramp it up a little with more tacks/gybes and teamwork focus in preparation for the following days race!
- 17 Sep - Commodore's Cup Race 3 - A series of events that contribute to the CommCup, this day's event will take you out to the coast for a competitive race against other locals. Skippered by Undergrad Advisor Kevin.
- 22-24 Sep SAISA Match Race - SAISA Match Race Championships is 1v1 racing in the same J/22 boat. This once-a-year opportunity allows racers a different and unique style of racing that has its own rules that sailors must quickly learn. While Offshore already has 4 competitive sailors in mind, please go ahead and register if interested and available so that we can consider you! Our Logistics Officer Andrew is currently Skippering this event.
- 23 & 24 Sep Day-Excursions - Sign up to get on Lively! While 4 Offshore members will be away for SAISA, Lively will be available for day-sails. Senior attendee will skipper!
- 6 - 9 Oct Larchmont IOR (LIOR) & 13 Sep - 5 Oct LIOR Back-up Events - Initially established the early 1970’s by The Corinthians. This invitational regatta for college sailors is held annually out of Larchmont Yacht Club and brings together keelboat owners and young sailors for an opportunity to go head-to-head each Fall. While 7 Offshore members have already been selected to attend (thus the RSVP for LIOR is closed), I've created an additional "Back-Up" event open from 13 Sep - 5 Oct. Should any of the selected Offshore crew be unable to attend, for whatever reason, then having a pre-arranged back-up roster allows us to quickly adapt to a large and unmissable event! RSVP for the Back-up if you are available 6-9 Oct for LIOR and desire to be considered!
Alright, I think that's enough for now. Again 18 Sep meeting at 5:30pm in COAS 205, and RSVP if you want to be on a roster for consideration!
Cheers,
-Mario
