The ERAU Philosophy Club is assembling Embry-Riddle's first team to compete in the APPE Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl. The regional competition takes place Saturday, December 5, at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.
The Ethics Bowl is not a debate tournament. Teams receive a set of cases ahead of time, each describing a real ethical dilemma, and are judged on how clearly and carefully they reason through them. No one is assigned a position to argue, and no debate or philosophy background is required. Judges score teams on the quality of their analysis, their responses to questions, and how well they engage with the other team's reasoning.
The team will consist of five competitors and one alternate, coached by Dr. Michael Lindquist of the Humanities Department. Registration for the regional has already been completed with funding from SGA.
Two upcoming club meetings are dedicated to the Ethics Bowl, both from 6:00 to 7:00 PM in the Student Union Chamber Room:
- Monday, October 19 — Mock Ethics Bowl. An introduction to the format and a walkthrough of this year's cases.
- Monday, November 2 — Team Tryouts. Selection of the competing team and alternate.
Students who sign up through the interest form will receive the official case set, the competition rules, and updates on meetings and practice sessions. Signing up is not a commitment and does not guarantee a spot on the team. Interested students are encouraged to sign up early, since the group will begin working through the cases before tryouts.
